In 2011, demoscene artist viznut discovered that he could pipe the output of very short computer programs into audio output.

It spawned a genre that got labeled bytebeat, a form of glitch music. There’s a bunch of tools to make experimenting with composing these easier, including Glitch Machine, Bytebeat, libglitch, Html5 Bytebeat, or this online tool.

Viznut has posted a couple of blog posts with some analysis of the appeal of the genre.
