Kinematics 3D printed dress
I’ve mentioned nervous system in passing, but their latest ready-to-wear, completely 3D printed dress is an interesting look that where the technology is progressing. Their software allows the designer to define the shape of the dress and the wearer’s body, and generates the resulting nylon petals from that, resulting in clothing that perfectly fits an actual body. (You can play around with their Kinematics cloth generator if you want to try designing one yourself.)
They have a pretty through writeup on the project: http://n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com/blog/?p=7162, the result of which is going to be on display at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston from March 6th - July 10.
The challenges they’re overcoming in designing and manufacturing 3d printed fabric objects, such as their folding technique, are the kinds of things that will inform manufacturing in the future. And I think it’s an effective illustration of the general principle that generative processes are leading us to a world that is both more efficient and better tailored to individual humans.
