It’s been a year and a day since I started this blog. So now that it is no longer a serf, it seems like an appropriate time to take a look at itself. After a year of talking about procedural generation, linking to tutorials, and answering questions, what have we learned?

Procedural generation is thriving. There have been a ton of things made for NaNoGenMo and ProcJam, more than I’ve been able to talk about. I’ve been able to cover work by Strangethink, katierosepipkin, Loren SchmidtTom Betts, Allison Parrish, Kate ComptonMichael Cook, and many, many other people.

We’ve talked about theories and aesthetic questions for procedural generation: framingcontext, order, infinity, and more unpredictable stuff. Not to mention Emily Short’s Salt, Mushroom, Beeswax, Venom, and Egg; or Gillian Smith and Jim Whitehead’s work on expressive ranges, which probably deserve further coverage.

We’ve talked about generating maps, dungeons, planets, plants, buildings, worlds, music, and a lot more: Behavioral animation, livecoding, audio generation, Zelda. I’ve answered some questions and had a few guest posts submitted.

Even with all that, there’s a lot more to talk about. Not to mention all of the ProcJam, 7 Day Roguelike, and NaNoGenMo entries left. I’ve learned a lot so far (and hopefully you have too) but there’s a still a lot to discover.
